It sure has been hot this week with high temperatures reaching the mid to upper 90’s every single day. Unfortunately, these high temperatures bring along with the high electric bills as our air conditioning systems struggle to keep us cool. To help you battle the heat and the electric bill, here are a few simple do it yourself tips to help your air conditioning win the battle of the heat.
Change Your Filter Monthly
According to the US Department of Energy, replacing a dirty filter with a clean one can reduce your unit’s energy consumption by 5% to 15%! Over time air conditioning filters clog with dust and debris restricting the air flowing through them. This makes your air conditioning system work twice as hard to try and cool down your home. Change your filter at least once a month to make sure that your unit remains clean and the airflow is the best it can be. A handy tip to help you remember when to change the filter is to keep a black marker by your unit and write the date on the filter when you install it. This way, it is easy to tell when it is time to change out the filter.
Keep the outside unit clear!
Take a walk outside and find the condensing unit (it’s the loud box thing with the fan in it). Make sure that the fins on the outside of the unit are not clogged with grass clippings, leaves, and other debris. Also, be sure that if there are plants or other shrubs around the unit that they are trimmed back to allow a 2-foot clearance around the unit. This will maximize airflow and allow your unit to cool efficiently.
Bring in the Pros
Beyond the above two items, there are many things that could be affecting your unit’s performance. We recommend having a licensed air conditioning vendor do a complete check of your unit every year. Finding problems before they become an emergency can save you hundreds on after-hours emergency calls. A licensed air conditioning vendor can make sure your unit has enough refrigerant, check for leaks, check for leaks in your ducts (don’t want to air condition the attic do you?), check air flow through the coils, and much more.
Having a properly functioning air conditioning unit can save you hundreds of dollars in one Orlando summer!
